Heishi BraceletsArtist Statement:
For the Heishi bracelet assignment i was able to chose my color scheme because I started with my favorite color which is red and combined it with a gold because i was in love with a lunar new year design and than for my other bracelets i kept the gold color scheme and paired it with black and white. the most interesting part of the assignment was getting to express myself in my color scheme for the bracelet. the most challenging part of the assignment was making sure that the patterns on the bracelet stayed even as well as making sure my bracelets followed a similar color scheme so they could be a set. |
Stone Wire Jewelry PendantArtist Statement:
I chose to make wire stone pendants for one of my best friends. The pendant on the left represents how responsible and mature she can be with a very straight geometric design. The stone on the right represents a more fun side, the stone has more color and more curvy details. One interesting thing about this project was seeing how different organic shapes of stones could portray different designs so even if you did the same design the difference in stone would make them look unique. The biggest challenge of this project was keeping the wire straight, after bending it the wire would stay bent. This was overcomeable by making sure you know what your design is in advance. |
Polymer clay cane EarringsFrom the first practice we did I found that contrast in colors were really appealing with the clay so for my earrings I chose to do one pendant in brighter pinks and reds and do the other a mixture of red and black keeping the red consistent but changing the pink and black. I also found that marbling the clay in your clay cane gave it a smoother pattern versus the sharper patterns normally in the clay cane so before making my clay cane i marbled some of the colors together so that they would turn out smoother in the clay sheet. My biggest challenge in this project was shaping my pendants as well as making sure they were smooth, I found that after initially cutting them when i would handle them it would alter the shape by leaving indents in the pendant before i could bake them off. The most interesting thing about how the polymer clay cane method works is how unique and different the end result can turn out even though when you cut them from the cane they are all the same pattern. So by rotating and flipping the smaller disks before rolling them out created a more changing and unique sheet.

Jump ring EarringsThe main idea of the project was to create a pair of earrings using principals of design like pattern, rhythm, and movement while using jump rings to create the design. I researched using key phrases like Jump ring earrings and Jump ring jewelry designs to help get a better understanding of different motifs of jump ring earrings as well as common patterns you can make out of jump rings. I wanted to sketch a design with clear movement from top to bottom so by having a basic pattern of rings at the top with one major ring ring followed by strands of tiny rings hooked together to create that dangling flowing effect i was hoping to achieve this goal. When actually putting together my design i found that the initial pattern i wanted was very hard to fit together based on the slight difference in ring sizes they used so i had to end up changing the design at the top. another thing i noticed when taking photos of my first finished design i realized i didn't like the left to right triangle i had create out of the strands at the bottom and ended up changing it to a more symmetrical upside down triangle that i think looks a lot more balanced. I think one thing i could fix in my design is the way everything fits and lays because when hanging the design up i realized that the two earrings ended up laying a bit differently than intended.

Metal PendantI chose to design a pendant that not only has a design I would like and something I would actually wear but i wanted something that could represent me in some way. I really wanted a pendant that had a wolf design considering that it is my favorite animal but to make it even more abstract and even further represent me I abstracted the Wolf to make the shape of the letter G because it's the first letter of my name. The biggest challenge I knew I was gonna face was how I was going to cut the sharp corners and small spaces in my design that i was able to get around by cutting out smaller shapes first allowing for easier access to these areas that way i don't have to worry about hard angles when cutting. I think my most successful part of my design is considering how many pointy and sharp edges my design has I was able to file and sand the pendant enough to where those areas still appear sharp but are actually quite smooth. I think that there are a couple areas especially in inner corners like by the pointy fur pieces or the eye that i couldn't get the file through so they weren't as smooth as I wanted

Leather EarringsFor this project I was able to create a 2D earring design using both positive and negative space. My design was meant to be sort of an abstracted heart, Originally my design did not fully connect at the top but we ended up changing it because we figured the earring would not hold well and would end up curling if it didn't fully connect. If I could change something about my design I( would have added more detail in the middle of the heart so that not only the design would have become more intricate instead of simple but it would also have more structure.
